IN MEMORY OF DEREK BACON BLWSc Hons '06
16 July 2012
Derek Bacon graduated with Honours in a Bachelor of Land and Water Science degree from the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment at The University of Sydney in 2006. Tragically Derek passed away on 9 July 2012. Many staff will remember him from his time in the Faculty, as the degree was small at that time, and there were only a handful of students in Derek's year. Derek had many talents, including a real love for rugby league as we discovered during the second year fieldtrip. Derek liked fieldwork - he was in his element with lots of different things to look at and ponder. Field trips in the Faculty are always a real social affair and this was something to enjoy for all students! They also give staff a chance to get to know students better, which meant I got to know him a bit more.
Derek always was particularly interested in hydrology and was interested in the quantitative aspects of hydrology. As the degree coordinator of the BLWSc degree and also Derek's Honours' supervisor I interacted with him quite regularly in his senior years. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Derek because he always showed flashes of brilliance, and I was hoping to develop these during his Honours.
After his degree, and a short stint with AQIS, I was delighted to hear that he found a position at the Bureau of Meteorology as a hydrologist. I felt this was the right position for him and would develop his career. I last saw him at the Faculty's Centenary dinner celebrations in mid 2010.
The Faculty and I are very sad to lose Derek as a friend, alumnus and colleague, and send warm wishes to his family at this difficult time.
Derek's father, Dr Peter Bacon, is also an alumnus, graduating with a BSc Agr in 1973, and a MAgr in 1982.
Derek's funeral will be held at 2pm on Friday 20 July, in the Garden Chapel at Castlebrook Memorial Park, Windsor Road, Rouse Hill. Please contact me if you interested in attending
