Professor Mark Adams on fire risks and management in Victoria

12 April 2011

Professor Mark Adams, the Dean of our faculty, has written an opinion paper of his views regarding fire risks and their management in Victoria's high country.

"The Victorian State Government faces considerable challenges to reduce the risks posed to lives, property and the environment by uncontrolled and uncontrollable bushfires," he writes. "Those risks are likely to increase as the frequency and severity of bushfire events increases."

Professor Adams says extensive research is needed, particularly in the lower lying sub-alpine forests and montane regions, where research is so far limited, particularly compared to higher regions such as the Bogong High Plains.

"Options for research and demonstration experiments need to be carefully considered and developed... This would include a thorough review and synthesis of existing evidence and analysis to identify critical ecological characteristics, and to inform the sampling protocols and sampling effort required to reliably detect change."
