Lila Ram wins Excellence Award for UNICEF work

Faculty of Education graduate, Lila Ram, won a 2013 Australian Alumni Excellence Award in Pakistan for contributions to education. The award ceremony took place in Islamabad and was presented by Peter Hayward, the Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan.

Ram grew up in Pakistan in the City of Karachi. He graduated from the University of Sydney in 2006 with a Masters in research methodology. While at university, Ram was a member of the Sydney University Postgraduate Representative Association (SUPRA), which is a student body committed to providing help to postgraduate students at the University. After graduating, Ram returned to Pakistan where he worked for the Teachers Resource Centre, contributing to various jobs including the training of teachers who would work in primary education for low income schools.

Ram started work at UNICEF as an education officer in 2008, working to assist primary school girls from low socio-economic backgrounds. Ram and UNICEF aid the girls in order to advance their learning outcomes and increase the likelihood that they will stay in school free from corporal punishment. Ram continues this work in the Pakistani education system today.
