Design Lab at Sydney Design 2016

The future-focused Design Lab at the University of Sydney's Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning is taking an active role in this years Sydney Design program. The annual design festival (2 - 11 September) themed 'Make or Break' features a number of our leading academics and researchers challenged to transform Sydney and provides visitors an opportunity to discuss the future of design, production methods and digital technologies.

Democratising Design: Making New Futures By Breaking Old Rules
Co-presented by the University of Sydney's Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning, the University of Sydney Architecture Alumni and Friends Association, and IxDA Sydney.

This session explores how design thinking and technological advancements are changing industries in design and the built environment. Speakers include Mathew Aitchison, Chair of Innovation in Applied Design at the University of Sydney, Martin Tomitsch, Head of Design at the University of Sydney, Katja Forbes, Founder & Managing Director at syfte (MC), and Tim Horton, Registrar, NSW Architects Registration Board.

Mixed Realities: Designing Interactive Experiences with VR Headsets
In this workshop, which is based on on-going research at the University of Sydney's Design Lab, participants will learn how to design interactions for mixed realities. In mixed reality environments, virtual elements are superimposed onto the physical world. This opens up possibilities for applications in the home and workplace that go beyond gaming!

When: Saturday 3 September / Session 1 takes place 11am to 1pm. Session 2 takes place 2pm to 4pm.

Design, Think, Make, Break, Repeat
This session explores the role and value of making and breaking as part of the design thinking process. At the University of Sydney we have been teaching design thinking for 15 years as part of our programs on interaction and digital design. This session provides an opportunity to take a 2-hour glimpse into the world of design thinking.
