Germaine Greer will share her experiences of rehabilitating an area of rainforest in South-East Queensland as part of a special Sydney Ideas event at the University of Sydney's Great Hall this Sunday.

In her only Sydney presentation on her new book White Beech: The Rainforest Years, Greer will outline how what started as an attempt to find a place for her archives, ended with her investing her life savings into what became the Cave Creek Rainforest Rehabilitation Scheme(CCRRS).

"This is the story of an extraordinary stroke of luck," says Greer. "You could call it 'life-changing', if only every woman's life were not an inexorable series of changes to which she has to adapt as well as she can".

Germaine Greer is an alumna of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney, graduating with a Master of Arts in 1963 and receiving a Doctor of Letters (honoris causa) in 2005. University of Sydney Historian Dr Julia Horne will provide the introduction to Germaine's talk.

"Germaine has managed to tell a compelling story about what an 'Australian rainforest' is," says Dr Horne. "This will vary from region to region, even from valley to valley, but she tells us how to look at the rainforest, identify the native species and then set about restoring the environment to allow them to flourish.

"I think the book makes a compelling case that we can't expect governments to take on the responsibility of nature preservation alone, that we all need to pitch in and do something," she adds.

"Lifting the veils off our eyes about the importance of our natural environment, and learning why we should love it, is an important thing," she says.
