Arts and Social Sciences graduates honoured at 2013 Alumni Awards Ceremony

Four Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences students were honoured at the Alumni Awards ceremony on 27 September, each recognised for their academic achievements and outstanding contributions to life at the University of Sydney.

Daniel Ward, BA (Adv.)(Hons.) '09 LLB '13, was awarded the Convocation Medal for Undergraduate Achievement for his contribution to both the university and the wider community. During his time at the University of Sydney, Daniel earned numerous academic prizes including the University Medal in both Arts and Law, as well as making an energetic contribution to university life. His leadership within the university through the Sydney University Symphony Orchestra, the Sydney Law Review and his tutoring at St Paul's College was also recognized, along with his work in the wider community at the Redfern Legal Centre and at New York City's Unemployment Action Center during his student exchange.

Dr Keirnan Dorney, BA '08 MBBS '13, was the recipient of the Nigel C Barker Medal for Sporting Achievement, recognised for his academic performance and his roles as captain and starting quarterback for the Sydney University American Football team and coach of the Under 18 Sydney University Cubs. He was also honoured for his sporting achievements in the wider community, as both captain and quarterback of the NSW and national gridiron teams, and as one of few Australians to join a US college football team, the Santa Barbara City College Vaqueros.

Eloise Howse, BA (Hons) '12 MPHlth '13, was awarded the Edmond Barton Medal for Masters by Coursework Achievement, in recognition for her work for the Student's Representative Council (SRC) in various roles including president, director of student publications and O-week director. She was also honoured for her involvement in the National Union of Students Executive, the University's Student Appeals Board, the Sydney University Dramatic Society, and the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Scheme. Eloise also served a role as the dean of students at St Andrew's college.

Yun Liu, BIGS (Hons) '13, received the John C Harsanyi Medal for International Student Achievement for her work as an international intern at the University of Sydney Union (USU) and as the vice-president of Unimates, the largest intercultural society on campus. As an intern at USU, she was organised a number of events aimed to inspire international students to participate in campus life, including Multicultural Night, a pilot program that is now a festival. In her role with Unimates, Yun Liu actively sought volunteering and mentoring opportunities for international students.
