Students from the Department of Chinese Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences have embarked on a month long in-country study program, where they will attend classes and immerse themselves in Chinese culture at the University of Fudan.

The program, which was developed in partnership with the University of Fudan and the Peking University, was launched in 2012, and aims to improve students' language skills in the Chinese-speaking environment, whilst also providing the opportunity to experience Chinese culture and society first hand.

"There is nothing that matches in-country study to improve student's language capacities" says Professor Jeffrey Reigel, Head of the School of Languages and Cultures.

"We are thus extremely pleased that we can offer our students two programs from which to choose: Peking University in the north; and Fudan University in the south. We are also happy that the two universities with which we are working have been extremely accepting of our recommendations with regard to teaching materials and textbooks".

The Program is managed by the Department of Chinese Studies at the University of Sydney and taught by academic staff of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Fudan University (DCLL) and the School of Chinese as a Second Language at Peking University (SCSL).

"Our students are getting University of Sydney training in Chinese but it is happening overseas in authentic environments" adds Professor Reigel.

Whilst on the trip, the program coordinator Xiaowei Zhang, along with the students, maintain a blog where they can share their thoughts and experiences for those back home.
