The Faculty is saddened by the passing of Emeritus Professor Michael Halliday, founder of the Department of Linguistics at the University of Sydney, aged 93.

Professor Halliday was an internationally recognised scholar in modern linguistics and was the founder of the theory of language known as Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). Those who knew him remember him as a warm and inspirational figure who always made time for those around him.

The Faculty would like to acknowledge his contribution to the University of Sydney from 1976 to 1987.
