Masters of Publishing program receives accreditation by the Australian Publishers Association

10 August 2011

The peak industry body in Australia for publishing, the Australian Publishers Association (APA), has officially accredited the Department of Media and Communications Masters of Publishing program.

Maree McGaskill, CEO of the APA says of the accreditation, ''The University of Sydney Masters of Publishing program has proven to be a varied and interesting course, which covers all aspects of publishing in Australia. The academic teaching staff have the necessary experience, and the placement of graduates into the industry has been strong, which is a good sign of the program's effectiveness".

The University of Sydney Masters of Publishing program has been running since 2007, around the time that Macquarie University received their accreditation from the APA. RMIT was the first University to receive the accreditation in 2005. The course is designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge required for the book, magazine and electronic publishing industries.

"Gaining the APA accreditation for the Master of Publishing means our students can be sure their degree is recognised by the industry as relevant and up to date, and taught by the best teachers available", says Associate Dean Fiona Gilesfrom the department of Media and Communications.

"Because this is such a rapidly changing industry, it's helpful for students to get a broad understanding of publishing, not just a specialised skill set. So they're also getting a great overview of the ways in which book, digital and magazine publishing is converging, at the same time as learning about the latest design and editing software, and the growth of ebooks and apps. This means they could go straight into existing jobs, but also be in a position to create new ones," says Associate Dean Giles.

As the publishing industry is in a state of rapid change, there is a growing need to learn of the upcoming challenges, "The Masters of Publishing program has proven invaluable to me in my everyday work. By giving me an insight into the history of the industry and the challenges it faces in the future, it has also equipped me well to further my career in the field" - Marcus Olsson, M.Pub graduate
