A night of memories, drama and feasting with John Bell

21 September 2011

One of Australia's most loved and distinguished actors and directors, John Bell, an alumnus of the University of Sydney, will reflect on his life and career at a special dinner to be held in the Great Hall on 24 September.

The event, which is open to the public, will feature a Shakespearean soliloquy by Bell and a medieval-themed four-course feast, including a recreation of a 1588 recipe for apple and orange tart.

Bell is the founder and current Artistic Director of the Bell Shakespeare Company. He started his career after graduating from the University of Sydney in 1962 with a Bachelor of Arts.

He worked for the Old Tote Theatre Company before going on to work for all of Australia's state theatre companies and was an Associate Artist of the Royal Shakespeare Company in the UK.

As co-founder of the Nimrod Theatre Company, he produced many landmark Australian plays including David Williamson's Travelling North, The Club and The Removalists.

Bell initiated an Australian Shakespeare style with Nimrod productions such as Much Ado About Nothing and Macbeth.

In 1990 he founded the Bell Shakespeare Company where his productions have included many of the best-loved and also lesser-known Shakespearean comedies and tragedies.

John Bell's Shakespeare roles include Hamlet, Shylock, Henry V, Richard III, Macbeth, Malvolio, Coriolanus, Prospero, King Lear and Titus Andronicus.

He played the title role in two co-productions with Queensland Theatre Company: Richard III and Heiner Müller's Anatomy Titus Fall Of Rome: A Shakespeare Commentary.

In 2008 Bell directed a production of Madame Butterfly for an Oz Opera national tour.

He has been appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, a Member of the Order of Australia and an Officer of the Order of Australia.

In 1996 a Doctor of Letters was conferred on Bell by the University.
