Sydney Writers' Festival seeking volunteers
20 March 2012
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is sponsoring Sydney Writers' Festival (SWF) in 2012, and SWF is putting a call-out for volunteers for their world-class festival this May 14th-20th. Presenting an excellent opportunity to network in the arts, literature and events industries, not to mention the chance to give back to the community, volunteering is a rewarding experience.
Described by SWF Volunteer Coordinator Jennie Bradbury as 'the friendly face of the festival', she sees the volunteers as what keeps the festival functioning.
"Volunteers enthusiasm, energy and willingness to contribute and work as a team to make the Sydney Writers' Festival a success is imperative", she says.
"We pride ourselves on being one of the most approachable, friendly, and professional team of volunteers in the world. This great team helps to create and sustain our infamously positive and exciting atmosphere."
Volunteering duties can include looking after authors and speakers backstage and at book signings, welcoming, meeting and greeting festival attendees, helping out at information booths, ensuring marshaling of crowds runs as smoothly as possible, looking after media, and assisting crew with change overs of audience space between events.
As well as being a fantastic experience, an important part of volunteering is having an interest in the festival being a success. Bradbury explains, "We need our volunteers to make a commitment to the festival, to be diligent in their roles and act professionally at all times, to be as flexible and accommodating as possible, but most importantly to approach their role with a positive attitude and the desire to have a really good time. Volunteering is and should be fun!"
This sense of fun can be seen in the feedback that previous volunteers have provided to SWF. "I volunteered last year and greatly enjoyed it. Overall it was a fun experience and I made new friends. Volunteering also allowed me to develop valuable skills and it's great to continue to build on those skills", said one of last year's SWF volunteers.
As part of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences sponsorship, we will be co-presenting festival events, including a feature event in the Great Hall. The festival program will be announced on March 29th, with the official program being distributed in the Sydney Morning Herald on Saturday 31st March.
Online volunteer applications are now open and will close on April 5th. Further information and the online application can be found here. Where possible we will try to have as many of our University of Sydney volunteers present at our co-sponsored events, so please ensure you mention your affiliation with the University in your application.
Please note if positions are filled prior to the closing date it will be brought forward. Don't miss out - apply now.
