Dr Dong-Sheng Jeng - Tidal dynamics of Jimmy's Beach: Seepage face effects

Tidal dynamics in a sandy beach is particularly important for coastal engineers involved in the prediction and control of beach erosion. Most previous investigations have ignored the seepage face effect, which significant affect the beach erosion under large-amplitude oscillation. The special goals of this project are:
(1) to develop theoretcal models (mathematical and numerical models) for tide-induced groundwater table fluctuation with seepage face effects;
(2) to conduct a field study to clarify the mechanism and verify the theoretical model, and provide reliable data for future study; and
(3) to establish preliminary foundation for an ARC Grant application.

Dr Gianluca Ranzi - Novel technique for the mechanical characterisation of aluminium alloys at the micro scale by means of indentation test, imprint mapping and inverse analysis

The aim of this project is to develop, calibrate and validate a methodology for the determination and characterisation of the material parameters apt to describe the mechanical behaviour of aluminium alloys by means of indentation test, imprint mapping and inverse analysis. It is envisaged for this novel technique to be applied to characterise a wide range of materials with applications in the manufacturing, biomedical and aerospace industries
