Gu Qin Concert with the Conservatorium

6 August 2011

The workshop and concert were fully booked out. 116 people attended the Guqin concert and 35 people attended the Guqin workshop.

The University of Sydney Confucius Institute and The Sydney Conservatorium of Music co-presented a Guqin Concert by Chinese musician Jin Wei on the 6th of August 2011.

The guqin has been played since ancient times in China and has traditionally been favoured by scholars and literati as an instrument of great subtlety and refinement. In 2003, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization) proclaimed guqin as a masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of humanity.

Jin Wei is internationally recognised as a world authority and master of the gu qin. Professor Jonathan Stock, Associate Dean (Research) at The Con, will open the concert and give a short introduction on the gu qin. Prof. Stock is currently co-editor of the journal The World of Music and is a Chinese music specialist.

Gu qin players and students had the opportunity to meet Jin Wei at a pre-concert Guqin Workshop.
