Sydney Ideas Public lecture series: In conversation with Pipa Virtuoso Wu Man
3 September 2013
On 29th October, the Confucius Institute and Sydney Ideas will co-present In conversation with Pipa Virtuoso Wu Man. Named '2013 Musician of the Year' by Musical America, Wu Man is recognized as the world's premier Pipa virtuoso and a leading ambassador of Chinese music. A Grammy Award-nominated artist, Wu Man's passion for music and multi-cultural collaborations has established her as an expert in the history and preservation of Chinese musical traditions. In 2011, Wu Man's two performances at the Sydney Festival were a complete sell out. She is back in the country to perform three concerts with the Sydney Symphony at late October. Rory Jeffes, the CEO of the Sydney Symphony will facilitate the conversation with Wu Man.
In the past, Wu Man has collaborated with the Philip Glass Ensemble, Yuri Bashmet, Dennis Russell Davies, Christoph Eschenbach, Gunther Herbig, Tan Dun, and David Robertson. She is a principal member of Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project and has also regularly performed with the Kronos Quartet. In Conversation with Wu Man will offer an insight into Wu Man's musical journey and how she has incorporated both Chinese and Western musical elements into her unique style.
