Director of Confucius Institute Opens Wang Tiande Exhibition
22 July 2010
On 22 July, Professor Hans Hendrischke, Director of the University of Sydney Confucius Institute gave a speech at the opening reception of a solo exhibition by Professor Wang Tiande, one of the most innovative calligraphers in China. Professor Wang is also Dean at the Art and Design department of Fudan University, Shanghai, which is a partner university of the University of Sydney Confucius Institute.
The exhibition, held at the Sydney College of the Arts, showcases developments in Professor Wang's digital series, which began in 2002. The display features both his ink and brush calligraphy and 'burned script', created by using a lit cigarette. The viewer can see the abstract quality of Chinese calligraphy with the visual effect of the 'burned script', so that the work represents both calligraphy and painting. The exhibition is on display until Friday 30 July.
