Professor Jeffrey Riegel Opens School Principals Lecture Series

On 3 August 2010, Professor Jeffrey Riegel, Head of the School of Languages and Cultures, Faculty of Arts at the University of Sydney,gave a lecture to school principals from across Sydney's Western Region. The address, co-presented by the University of Sydney Confucius Institute and Sydney Region, Department of Education and Training,was entitled 'The Beginnings of the Chinese Writing System and the Origins of Chinese Literature'.
The lecturewas contained within the Confucius Institute's school principal and teacher training program. Itwas aimed at providing school principals with a greater understanding of Chinese language, culture and history, as there is a large concentration of students from Chinese backgrounds in the region.
Professor Riegel's main areas of research are the thought, literature and archaeology of early China. He has published books and articles in these areas. Professor Riegel frequently visits China and is a board member of the Confucius Institute.
