Public Seminar: The Contemporary Shanghai Writers' Obsession with their Dialect

On 9 August 2010, Chinese Director of the University of Sydney Confucius Institute Professor Yuanbao Gao held a public seminar entitled 'The Contemporary Shanghai Writers' Obsession with Their Dialect'. In this talk, Professor Gao discussed the contradictory situation of contemporary Shanghai writers who speak in the Shanghai Hua dialect yet use common spoken Chinese (Putonghua) to write.

Professor Gao Yuanbao is an award-winning literature critic and expert in Chinese literature. He has been a professor in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature of Shanghai's Fudan University since 1992. He has a PhD from Fudan University and has taught a wide range of subjects within the BA, MA and PhD programs, including contemporary Chinese literature, history of modern Chinese literature, evolution of modern Chinese language and Lu Xun and modern Chinese culture.
