BDent Graduates Publish in the International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry

17 January 2012

A significant achievement by BDent 4 Honours students, Matthew Lewis and Michelle McNab, was proudly announced today by their supervisor, Dr Amit Arora.

Their paper, `I can't relate it to teeth': a qualitative approach to evaluate oral health education materials for preschool children in New South Wales, Australia, was accepted for publication by the highly respected International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry.

Feedback to the students on the manuscript was provided by Professor Eli Schwarz(Oregon Health and Science University, USA) andMr Glen Hilton (University of New Castle, Australia) and Professor Anthony Blinkhorn provided feedback in the questionnaire development process.

This research highlights that parents living in disadvantaged communities are unable to understand key oral health messages to implement health behaviour change. It reiterates that producers of health education leaflets in New South Wales and elsewhere should keep the health messages simple and use pictorial aids to improve communication with parents.

The project led by Dr Arora from the University of Sydney, assessing the impact of parental literacy on child oral health outcomes. This is a joint venture with University of California Los Angeles and Oregon Health and Science University in the United States and University of Calgary in Canada.

Please join me in congratulating Matthew and Michelle as they stand on the threshold of budding research careers.
