BDent Student research highlights that poor oral health plays a major role in child health problems
18 January 2012
BDent Graduand, Dina Bedros, has recently had her student research, "Child and family health nurses' experiences of oral health of preschool children: a qualitative approach" published in the Journal of Public Health Dentistry.
Her research, supervised by Dr Amit Arora, highlights the need for primary health care professionals in nursing and dentistry to work collaboratively to educate disadvantaged parents in a culturally-appropriate manner. Family health nurses identified that poor oral health plays a major role in child health problems and the need for vital education to families, not only on "what", but also on "how" to feed their children.
Of note is that this project demonstrated collaboration across the health professions with the research team including Professor Jane Scott (Flinders University, Australia), Dr Loc Do (University of Adelaide); and A/Professor Sameer Bhole (Sydney South West Local Health District). As Honours Examiners, Professor Eli Schwarz(Oregon Health and Science University, USA) andProfessor Anthony Blinkhorn from Sydney University provided valuable feedback.
Dina also received a runner-up Colgate award to present this research at the the recent Australian and New Zealand Division's IADR meeting in Melbourne in September 2011.
