Professor Andrew Martin appointed as AERA Fellow
25 March 2013
In recognition of his exceptional contributions to education research, Professor Andrew Martin from the Faculty of Education and Social Work has been named a 2013 Fellow of the American Educational Research Association (AERA).
Professor Martin joins a total of 23 Fellows appointed in the 2013 program, and is one of just two scholars elected from universities outside of the United States.
The AERA Fellows program serves to honour education academics for scholarship that significantly enhances educational research as a multidisciplinary field, with Fellows nominated by their peers in order to gain selection.
"As many faculty members who have also received peer-nominated awards will attest, recognition from peers is high praise in our line of work," Professor Martin said.
Professor Martin's recent research spans such diverse topics as resilience in young people, the impact of arts participation on youth outcomes, disengagement in mathematics, the effects of boarding school, and young people's adaptability in changing circumstances.
Looking ahead, Professor Martin said he plans to continue working with collaborators to "conduct research that is relevant, reliable and valid", and help disseminate this to inform educational research, policy and practice.
"Increasingly my research attention is drawn to students who are struggling and what factors keep them switched on and achieving to their full potential," he said.
"I'm also drawn to the extent to which these factors can generalise to other 'mainstream' or 'regular' students so we can identify efficient educational practices that can be widely recommended that do not unintentionally widen achievement gaps."
With national assessment, education funding approaches and teacher training dominating public debates in the lead up to the federal election, Professor Martin said such scholarship is increasingly necessary.
"There are important times ahead for researchers and the rigorous evidence they are to produce to inform these debates and integrations," he said.
Professor Martin will be officially inducted as an AERA Fellow at the association's annual meeting in San Francisco on April 28 2013.
