The book describes the history of the study of education in the United Kingdom and suggests what might be needed to rescue the 'university project' of education.

In this public lecture, Professor Furlong will present a preliminary typology of different approaches drawn from a research project which is exploring the social organisation of education as a field of study in seven different countries.
