English in the world

This lecture is the first in a series of three public presentations hosted by the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Research Network. The theme of the series, which will be presented by Professor Jack C. Richards is "The Worlds of English". In this lecture, Professor Richards will discuss the spread of English in the world and the various issues raised by its prevalence today as a global lingua franca. In coming weeks, his lectures will address approaches and issues in the teaching of English, as well as the nature of competence and professionalism from the point of view of people who teach English.

Professor Jack C. Richards is an honorary professor in the Faculty of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney. He is an internationally renowned applied linguist, teacher educator, and textbook author. A specialist in TESOL who has had an active career in the Asia-Pacific region for many years, Professor Richards has written many books and articles on language teaching methodology and teacher training, as well as many widely used classroom texts including the best selling series, Interchange.
