Australia Awards Fellowships

The AusAID-funded Australia Awards Fellowship commenced at the Faculty of Health Sciences on Monday 18 February 2013.

Twenty-five Fellows from eight East Asian countries are undertaking the program, which is focused on Increasing capacity for developing rights-based disability policy in South East Asia. The eight countries from which the Fellows are visiting are Lao PDR, Cambodia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia, and Timor Leste.

The Fellows include high-level government officials from the National Statistic Offices, Ministry of Social Welfare (or equivalent focal point for disability in each country), lead people from Disabled Persons Organisations (DPOs) and Non Government Organisations (NGOs).

The program will run until 8 March 2013 and Fellows will be spending time with University of Sydney experts and external partners including Professor Emeritus Ron Macallum AO (Chair, Monitoring Committee, UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities), Therese Sands and Samantha French (People with Disability Australia), Professor Richard Madden (Chair, Family Development Committee, WHO Family of International Classifications), Damian Griffis (Executive Officer, First Peoples Disability Network), Cain Beckett (Chair, NSW Disability Council), and Janet Meagher (National Mental Health Commissioner).

On Friday 1 March the delegation will travel to Canberra to visit the AusAID headquarters, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and the Australian Bureau of Statistics. They will also spend time with senior personnel working on the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Director of the Centre for Disability Research and Policy, Professor Gwynnyth Lllewellyn, said the delegates would experience a robust and diverse program of presentations, and that those involved also looked forward to learning from the Fellows."We are very thankful to the many organisations and individuals who have agreed to be involved in this program and who obviously have a passion for sharing their knowledge in this area.
