Health Sciences forges MOU with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University
28 October 2008
The Faculty of Health Sciences has further strengthened its international ties by formalizing a partnership with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) in a signing ceremony held in Hong Kong on Monday 20 October.
The Memorandum of Understanding creates an alliance between the University of Sydney's Faculty of Health Sciences and PolyU's Faculty of Health and Social Sciences (FHSS). Under the agreement FHSS and Health Sciences' students will benefit from a reciprocal exchange program in which student from both institutions can gain a deeper understanding in the disciplines of physiotherapy, occupational therapy, vision sciences and radiography. In addition, the MOU outlines plans for clinical exchange placements for coursework students, staff overseas attachments, and the sharing of scientific materials and information.
'This agreement will allow both staff and students to benefit from the exchange of ideas and gain a broader understanding of the field of health sciences informed by an international perspective,' commented Professor Llewellyn, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences.
In the long run the faculties have also agreed to explore avenues to encourage further academic exchange and the promotion of a global network of health. These may include research collaboration, a joint research symposium in the region and the introduction of cross-institutional initiatives in learning and teaching.
The MOU was celebrated in a special ceremony held on PolyU Campus and was signed by Professor Gwynnyth Llewellyn, Professor John Hearn, Deputy Vice Chancellor of International, and PolyU's Professor Suleyman Demokan, Vice President of Academic Development, and Professor George Woo, Dean of FHSS.
PolyU's FHSS offers a wide spectrum of programs in health care, social and human services disciplines. The Faculty is the sole provider of tertiary education in optometry, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and radiography in Hong Kong, and as such is committed to grooming professionals to provide quality health care services to the community at large.
