Students help raise over $1 million for Cancer Council
20 May 2013
Faculty of Health Sciences student David Grech (3rd year Exercise and Sport Science) teamed up with his friend Scott Bevz (a chiropractics student at Macquarie University) to raise $4000 towards the Shxtbox Rally's $1.19 million achieved this year for cancer research.
Earlier this month David and Scott took part in the epic 5,500 kilometre 'Shxtbox Rally' from Sydney to Freemantle via Adelaide and Uluru to help raise money for the Cancer Council. The only restrictions on the team were that they had to meet the fund raising target using a vehicle costing no more than $1,000.
"Our 'box' was nine different shades of green and at least one shade of rust" said David. A 1986 Holden Commodore, the car was auctioned off once they reached Freemantle, with the proceeds also donated to the Cancer Council.
This is the fourth year for the Shxtbox Rally, and David was rightly grateful for the opportunity to participate.
"Not everyone is given the same opportunities and our belief is that it's important to make the most of these chances" he said. "We don't often find ourselves in the position to give a leg-up to the less fortunate, and we were fortunate enough to be able to help out."
