FHS to send students to Indonesia under New Colombo Plan
12 June 2014
Faculty of Health Sciences students will have the opportunity to undertake volunteer placements in Indonesia under the Federal Government's New Colombo Plan (NCP).
Under the program, FHS will offer five scholarships worth $2,000 each to partially cover the cost of Occupational Therapy student participation in a two-week interdisciplinary field school on transportation run by the Sydney Southeast Asia Centre, plus a two-week volunteer placement with a community-based organisation working with children with disabilities in Indonesia. The learning experiences will be credited towards the students' degrees through FHS Abroad.
Dr Charlotte Scarf, Co-Director of FHS Abroad, led the Faculty's submission to the NCP. She said, "We are delighted to be among the first participants in the NCP program, and build on our strong track record of securing scholarship funding for high achieving students to gain international experience through FHS Abroad. Hopefully this is the first of many interdisciplinary field schools involving FHS students".
Details of the scholarship program are yet to be announced. The call for applications will go out in Semester 2, 2014.
