Government plans to lift pension age
15 May 2009
Professor Hal Kendig from the Faculty's Ageing, Work and Health Research Unit is quoted in an article on the ABC News Budget O9 Special which discusses the Government's proposal to raise the pension age to 67 by 2023.
"I think it is a very good idea for a number of reasons," he said.
"First, it recognises that quite naturally people are living longer, so it is a natural adjustment. It makes sense in terms of not only what the Government can pay, that is only part of it.
"It makes sense in enabling people to live a normal life for longer without, in a sense, becoming pensioners prematurely.
"But there are many other actions we actually need for sensible policy to deal with an aging population.
"This is just one part of what is going to be happening over the next decades."
