Dr Canning receives excellence in teaching award

12 October 2010

Dr Colleen Canning
has been named as the 2010 winner of the University Co-operative Bookshop Excellence in Teaching and Community Award. The award aims to promote, recognise and reward teaching practices that offer a fulfilling and well-rounded student-centred experience including access to academic and support resources and appreciation of the University of Sydney community.

Dr Canning was recognised for her leadership of the Physiotherapy eSkills project, an initiative aimed at enhancing learning of practical skills by providing physiotherapy students 24/7 access to an online learning resource including high-quality video clips and accompanying downloadable illustrative PDFs.

The panel unanimously selected Dr Canning for the award, citing and praising the "innovative use of a technology based resource" and her teaching and engagement of both students and the wider community through the use of these resources.

The panel found the comments on eSkills from students particularly impressive. With 100% of students suggesting that eskills made it easier for them to learn the skills and enhance their preparation for practical exams, it is clear that the impact of Dr Canning's commitment to this project has been immense.

The award provides Dr Canning with $1000 to contribute towards teaching resources and she has also been invited to address a student function to speak on her commitment to teaching and educating at a tertiary level.

The Faculty of Health Sciences congratulations Colleen on this fantastic achievement.
