University of Sydney Alumni Council Election

26 November 2013

Miss May Samali (BEcSocSc (Hon) '09, LLB '11) and Mr Peter Shaw (BSc '89, LLB '91, MBA (Exec) '05) have been elected as the Sydney Law School representatives for the University of Sydney Alumni Council. Both representatives were elected by and from members of Convocation for a four year term of office commencing on 01 January 2014 and concluding on 31 December 2017.

MissSamali is Deputy CEO and Company Secretary of the world's largest non-profit student consultancy. May is also part of the Alumni Leaders Network and aims to strengthen young alumni involvement and foster greater interaction between students and alumni. She is also a lawyer at Herbert Smith Freehills.

Mr Shaw is currently a partner with Maddocks. He was involved in fundraising for the new Law School building, has engaged with the Law School Dean on graduate attributes and has addressed students about practice as a solicitor.

MissSamali and Mr Shaw join all other elected members including eight existing members appointed directly by the Vice-Chancellor, as well as the five alumni who will join the new Council as newly elected Graduate Fellows of Senate.

The Alumni Council plays an important role in representing the University's 280,000 strong world-wide alumni community, engaging alumni in the life of the University and supporting alumni outreach programs.

New and returning Council members will also have a significant role to play in shaping the future role of the Alumni Council as they work through the recommendations of the Alumni Council's 2013 Review. Further information on the University of Sydney Alumni can be found here.

The Sydney Law School wishes to congratulate MissSamali and Mr Shaw and to also thank all alumni who nominated or voted in the 2013 Alumni Council elections.
