The effectiveness of CCTV in preventing crime
10 October 2012
Garner Clancey comments on the federal Coalition's announcement that it will spend $50 million on CCTV if it wins power next year.
Speaking to ABC TV news, he says the research evidence tends to suggest that public space CCTV systems tend to only have a modest crime prevention impact.
"When considering the use of funding to install a public space CCTV system, it is important to ensure that all elements are properly considered," he asserts.
"It isn't just the cameras that are important for effectiveness.
"The cameras need to be monitored and control room monitoring staff need to have direct communication with police.
"Funding for new public space systems should ensure that these elements of an entire system are considered, otherwise local governments can inherit significant recurrent costs."
