Professor Ron McCallum AO nominated to United Nations Committee

5 September 2008

The Sydney Law School would like to extend its congratulations to Professor Ron McCallum AO on his nomination by the Australian Government for election to the United Nations monitoring committee established under the new international Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Disability Discrimination Commissioner, Graeme Innes AM, welcomed the nomination, stating, "Professor McCallum is an eminent Australian and I am fortunate to have had him as friend and mentor.

"His achievements in law plus his lived experience of disability provide him with excellent qualifications for this role.

"All Australians - disability community representatives in particular - should applaud and support this nomination."

Australia, as one of the first countries to become a party to this important human rights treaty, is eligible to nominate a candidate for the committee election which will be held in New York on 3 November 2008.
