The University of Sydney's new Law School on the Camperdown Campus officially openedon Thursday, 30th April 2009.

Members of the public were invited to catch a rare insider's peak at some of the outstanding features of the Francis Jones Morehen Thorp-designed and Baulderstone-built building.

The University of Sydney's law faculty, inaugurated in 1855, was the first law school to be established in Australia. After nearly 120 years in Phillip Street Sydney it moved to the heart of the University of Sydney's Camperdown campus.

Designed by one-time Sydney University medallist Richard Francis-Jones, it overlooks Victoria Park towards the centre of Sydney, and features 16 seminar rooms, four 100-seat lecture theatres, a 300-seat auditorium and a "moot court" that gives students simulated first-hand court experience.

The façade is a sophisticated glass triple skinned façade which is made up of timber louvers which track the sun in winter and limit the sun in summer. The cavity space within the façade naturally ventilates the building, just one aspect of its environmental credentials.

Other interesting features include a 20 metre high light tower which is used to direct natural light into the law library. Clad in curved stainless steel panels and large glass panes, it is anticipated to become a landmark associated with the Camperdown Campus.

Free guided tours of the building - which features cutting-edge design elements such as a 13-metre light tower that pours light into the underground Law Library and natural lighting and cooling features - ran throughout the Day.

In the evening, the Governor General Quentin Bryce AC and the Attorney-General Robert McClelland officially launched the building. The Hon Chief Justice James Spigelman gave the official address, while other addresses were given by NSW Governor and University of Sydney Chancellor, Her Excellency Marie Bashir, Dean of the Faculty of Law Professor Gillian Triggs and Vice-Chancellor and Principal Dr Michael Spence.
