National compensation for stolen wages

20 August 2009

Dr Thalia Anthony says there were tens of thousands of indigenous workers across Northern Australia who worked for no pay except for meagre food and clothes rations.

In an interview with ABC Radio North Queensland (Townsville), Dr Anthony says she has been studying this area since 2000 and it is only in the last few years that respective governments have started to think about it as a political issue.

She adds that the Rudd Government has taken a similar stance to the Howard Government and simply does not want to be held responsible for past wrongs.

Dr Anthony will make a case for a national compensation scheme at a presentation in Townsville tomorrow.
