Sydney Law School Graduate Destination Report

The latest Sydney Law School Graduate Destination Report by the University of Sydney's Careers Centre is now available to download.

Compiled using data from the 2008 Australian Graduate Survey, the response rate was at its highest for quite some time, for approximately 50 per cent completing the survey.

A summary of the results is as follows:

  • A total of 424 Faculty of Law graduates participated in the 2008 survey
  • Within 4-6 months after graduation, graduates were employed predominantly in the private sector (67%) versus the public (29%) or not-for-profit (4%) sectors
  • 91% of graduates were employed in Australia
  • Only a small proportion of graduates (5%) were self-employed
  • Nearly half (43%) of students completing undergraduate study and 15% of students completing postgraduate study, were studying further
  • 81% of students completing undergraduate study and 88% of students finishing postgraduate study, were in fulltime employment
  • 86% of all Faculty of Law graduates were in some form of employment at the time of the survey
  • Of those graduates working fulltime, 82% were satisfied with their job and were not seeking a new role
  • The average gross annual salary for graduates of the faculty was $79,329 (r=328)
  • Students who had completed undergraduate study were earning an average gross annual salary of $51,507 (r=58). Students who completed post-graduate study reported an average gross annual salary of $98,927 (r=183)
  • Graduates relied on a range of methods to locate their employment. 18% of graduates found work via internet advertisements. A further 18% relied on family and friends or paper and print media (12%)
