Professor Ron McCallum AO appointed Chair of United Nations Committee for 2010

Sydney Law School would like to congratulate Professor Ron McCallum AO on his appointment as Chair of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities for 2010.
The election of Professor McCallum as Chair took place on Friday, 23rd October 2009 at a meeting of the Committee in Geneva, Switzerland.
Professor McCallum was appointed as the inaugural rapporteur to the United Nations Disabilities Convention in March 2009, following his election to the United Nations in November 2008 after his nomination by the Federal Government in September 2008.
A joint media release issued by the Attorney-General, Robert McClelland MP, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Stephen Smith MP and the Parliamentry Secretary for Disabilities, Bill Shorten MP stated:
"Professor McCallum's appointment complements Australia's commitment to upholding and safeguarding the rights of people with disabilities and to ensuring that they are treated equitably.
"The appointment also underlines the Government's commitment to engage positively on the international stage.
"Australia was one of the first Western countries to ratify the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
"The Government also acceded to the Optional Protocol to the Convention which enables the Committee to receive and investigate complaints after all domestic remedies have been exhausted.
"The Government is confident that Professor McCallum will continue to make a valuable and effective contribution in this important new role."
