Lifetime achievement award for Emeritus Professor Peter Butt

4 January 2010

Sydney Law School congratulates Emeritus Professor Peter Butt on his lifetime achievement award from Plain Language Association International.

Peter shared the award with Dr Robert Eagleson, from the English Department in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Sydney, for their work in raising awareness of the need for plain language in the legal and commercial world, their research, and their publications.
Peter's award also recognised his efforts in helping found the Centre for Plain Legal Language at the University of Sydney, and his presidency of Clarity (an international organisation, with over 1,000 members in 30 countries, aiming to influence the way that lawyers and legislators write).
In related news, his new edition of Land Law, the 6th edition, will be published in early January 2010.

This edition reflects the considerable change to property law in the last 5 years.

From 24-28 May 2010 Emeritus Professor Peter Butt will be teaching a 4 day intensive course entitled Plain English in Legal Writing in Cambridge, United Kingdom, in the Sydney Law School in Europe program, with guest lectures by leading specialists.

The course is open both to postgraduate students and to lawyers as legal professional development.
