Former Prime Minster Malcolm Fraser and the Vietnamese Refugee Crisis

4 January 2010

Professor Mary Crock says former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser deserves credit for the manner in which he dealt with the Vietnamese Refugee crisis in the late 1970s.

In a series of articles in The Australian, Professor Crock comments on Malcolm Fraser's approach to the issue following the release of cabinet documents by the National Archives.

"His humanitarianism and leadership during this period has never been properly recognised.

"At the time, it took a lot of courage.

"Up until 1972, we had a White Australia policy for everybody except for a narrow band of close family members.

"In my view, this was the only real refugee crisis we have faced."
