Global Energy and Resources Law

13 April 2010

This exciting addition to the Sydney Law School Postgraduate Program will be launched as a seminar unit on 28 September 2010.

Global Energy and Resources Law will provide perspectives on global energy security, international access to energy resources and the resolution of cross-jurisdictional energy access disputes.

In addition, it will deal with more conventional aspects of Energy and Resources Law such as: Land Law including Native Title; energy resources and approvals; dealings and registrations; Environmental Protection Law; and financial aspects such as project finance, energy trading and taxation.

The reform of the energy market in Australia and its implications for Competition Law, Third Party Access and Trade Practices, as well as the interface between energy resources and global climate change, will be canvassed.

The unit will be taught by a team of experts including members of Sydney Law School, such as Professor Gillian Triggs and Professor Rosemary Lyster, and members of the profession.

Each year, on the evening before the commencement of class the annual Kevin McCann Global Energy and Resources Law Lecture will be delivered, to which all students will be invited.

In 2010, the inaugural lecture will be delivered by Mr Zwiggy Switkowski on the topic of Nuclear Energy in the Context of Global Energy Security.

The dates for this unit in 2010 are 30 September, 1-2 September and 4 September.

The Kevin McCann Global Energy and Resources Law Lecture will be held at 6pm on 29 September at the Sydney Law School.

The unit is available to study through the following Sydney Law School degree programmes:

Candidates can also enrol in the subject on a Legal Professional Development (LPD), Single Unit Enrolment or Cross-Institutional basis.
