Update from the Peter Cameron Sydney Oxford Scholar
24 September 2010
2009 Peter Cameron Sydney Oxford Scholar, Aaron Rathmell (BEcSocSc 2006, LLB 2008) provides an update on his studies at Oxford University, where has had the opportunity to read for the Bachelor of Civil Laws (BCL).
Now the Oxford academic year has come to a close, I would like to thankSydney Law Schoolfor the opportunity provided by the Scholarship to read for the BCL.
In Trinity Term, the candid tutorial debates finally gave way to the highly formal exam process: four nerve-racking summer days in subfusc (gown, bowtie and cap in hand) in the Examination Schools.
The standard was very high, but it was actually a relief to be able to convey what we had learnt over a full year.
I am happy with my results and was fortunate to meet the conditions for an MPhil offer to stay on another year, with some funding.
I am, however, eager to practise and so have decided to read for the Bar course in London on a Denning Scholarship from Lincoln's Inn.
I cannot thank the Sydney Law School enough for the faithit showed in me whenit awarded the Cameron Scholarship last year.
Studying at Oxford was an extraordinary privilege and the experience is something I hope I will continue to reap and share the benefits of in the years ahead.
I remain in Oxford over the summer doing some research assistant work and am looking forward to seeing some friends from Sydney University who are arriving to start the next year of the BCL.
