The Laws of Deduction
15 November 2010
Professor Michael Dirkis commented on the case of Mr John Waters, who unsuccessfully requested a private ruling from the tax commissioner on deductions while living and working in Panama.
In an interview with the Australian Financial Review, Professor Dirkis said the Panama case highlights the unfair outcomes that can result since the Government removed tax concessions for many categories of foreign income last July.
He said he could understand the claim of Mr John Waters, particularly given the zone tax rebates for workers who travel to remote areas in Australia.
