Sydney Law School congratulates alumnus Ashley Black on his appointment as a judge of the Supreme Court of NSW.
The Hon Justice Ashley Black was sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court of NSW on Monday 4 July.
Black has been a dispute resolution partner at Mallesons Stephen Jaques since 1995, where he has appeared in a range of high profile commercial litigation cases since joining the firm in 1989.
Prior to this he was a Judge's Associate in the Federal Court of Australia in 1988, following his admission as a solicitor in 1987.
An Adjunct Professor of the Sydney Law School and a Visiting Fellow in the Faculty of Law at the University of New South Wales, Black is also a prolific author, having contributed to many legal publications throughout his career.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Laws and a Master of Laws from the University of Sydney and received first class honours for all three degrees. He was also awarded the Law Graduates Association Medal in his Masters of Laws.
Attorney General Greg Smith SC remarked that "Mr Black is a highly respected legal practitioner and his appointment to the Supreme Court is well-deserved".
