The News Corp phone-hacking scandal

21 July 2011

Professor Jennifer Hill believes the hacking scandal could spark a resurgence in institutional investor activism towards News Corp.

In an article published in Fairfax media newspapers, Professor Hill suggests it could resurrect the ill feeling that stems from the stoush with institutional shareholders over its relocation to the business-friendly US state of Delaware in 2004.
In a paper published last year, Professor Hill concluded the corporate governance concessions granted to the investors by News Corp had ultimately proved ''weak or ineffectual''.

She said a ''broad range'' of issues - including succession within the corporation - would come under scrutiny after the phone-hacking scandal.

Professor Hill also appeared on the ABC's Lateline Business to discuss the launch of News Ltd's internal inquiry in Australia
