Royal Dutch Shell and the Niger Delta oil spills

The Dean, Professor Gillian Triggs commented on the class action taken on behalf of 69,000 affected Nigerians in the British High Court, where Shell has admitted that it is liable for two spills in 2008.

In an interview with ABC Radio Current Affairs Program, PM, Professor Triggs agreed that the success so far of the class action may start ringing alarm bells for transnational companies.

"This class action in the United Kingdom is a ray of light," she said.

"It suggests that through class actions and wider assertions of jurisdictions under legislation, it's possible to bring international corporations that otherwise have no connection with the jurisdiction to account for their activities."
