2011 Sydney Top 100
8 December 2011
The annual list, compiled by The Sydney Magazine, is intended to consist of Sydney's most creative, provocative and inspiring people.
Emeritus Professor McCallum's entry reads as follows:
When he was 13, Ron McCallum decided he was going to succeed come hell or high water.
"I wasn't going to make baskets," says McCallum, who has been blind since birth.
"Succeed" is an understatement: McCallum, 63, was the foundation professor in industrial law at the University of Sydney and Dean of Law for five years.
He is also the chair of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
The father of three and the 2011 Senior Australian of theYear says holding the hand of an El Salvadoran man who had lost both his legs in a landmine blast was an epiphany.
"When I got up and walked away on two legs I felt guilty," says McCallum, who now campaigns against cluster bombs.
