Faculty of Pharmacy PhD student Michael Dolton has won the best mid-candidature PhD presentation award by the Dean, Professor Iqbal Ramzan.

Mid-candidature PhD student presentations were made to the faculty over two days last week. Students presented their research that aligns to the faculty's research theme areas. The mid-candidature presentations provide an ideal forum for postgraduate students to share their research experiences with colleagues and to practice the art of scientific presentations prior to showcasing their work to the external scientific community.

Professor Iqbal Ramzan said: "It is a long standing tradition that students who deliver an outstanding presentation are recognised for their effort at the faculty level. This year the winner, Michael Dolton, gave a fantastic presentation on developing pharmacokinetic models for voriconazole. Congratulations Michael."

Michael's project involves developing population pharmacokinetic models for an antifungal medicine called voriconazole. Using these models he identifies and quantifies sources of variability with voriconazole, and in the future aims to develop models that will assist clinicians in dose selection and adjustment with this medicine.

Michael said: "It is unexpected surprise to win the award and I am very happy. Winning this award has given me extra motivation to put further effort into planning and improving my presentations in the future."

Professor Andrew McLachlan, Michael's supervisor said: "These mid-candidature presentations are a great opportunity for our students to showcase their research, while also practicing their presentation skills and receiving helpful feedback from their colleagues and other members of the faculty. Michael gave a great presentation and put in a lot of hard work to prepare for it."

Special mention for outstanding effort goes to three other students: Ms. Rose Cairns, Ms. Irene Ng, and Mr. David Cipolla, who were runners up for the best presentation award.
