Prestigious appointments for pharmacy staff

23 November 2012

Two faculty staff members have been appointed to influential advisory positions. Professor Andrew McLachlan has been appointed by the Hon Catherine King, Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing as a member of the inaugural Australian Therapeutic Goods Advisory Council (ATGAC) and Professor Kim Chan has been appointed by the Australian Research Council (ARC) to its prestigious ARC College.

Professor McLachlan will be part of a team of experts, consumers and health care professionals that form the new Australian Therapeutic Goods Advisory Council (ATGAC). Chaired by Australia's Chief Medical Officer, Professor Chris Baggoley, the ATGAC will, over the next three years, give advice to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) on communication with the community and stakeholders, new management initiatives, and monitoring the TGA's progress against its broader reform agenda.

"The new Council members bring expertise in areas as diverse as clinical practice, research, industry experience, business management, health consumer issues and public administration," said the Hon Catherine King.

"Each member of the new ATGAC will contribute skills and knowledge in advancing the vital work of the TGA which is acknowledged as a world leader in the regulation of medicines and medical devices," Ms King said.

Professor Kim Chan's nomination to the ARC College, commencing in 2013, has been successful. The ARC College plays a key role in identifying research excellence in the ARC National Competitive Grants Program, moderating external assessments and recommending fundable proposals. Its members are experts of international standing drawn from the Australian research community: from higher education, industry and public sector research organisations.

Professor Iqbal Ramzan, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy said: "I would like to congratulate Professor McLachlan and Professor Chan. These two prestigious appointments are a worthy recognition of their hard work, expertise and standing within the research community."
