The Faculty of Pharmacy has celebrated it's 10th Anniversary and officially launched its newly named Faculty of Pharmacy Foundation with a formal dinner in MacLaurin Hall last Thursday, 7 October.
Addressing the guests, Professor Iqbal Ramzan, Dean of Pharmacy said: "On behalf of the Faculty and the Foundation's President, Mr Maurice Renshaw, I am very pleased to be able to launch the new Faculty of Pharmacy Foundation this evening. We have been privileged to have had an associated philanthropic foundation in Pharmacy since 1978 and have been the fortunate recipient of a great many generous donations from alumni, friends and corporate partners"
"This year with the shift to a cross-disciplinary research focus, the Faculty saw the need for its the Foundation to reflect the desire to focus its research on solving some of the greatest health challenges of our time, such as diabetes, cancer and asthma."
"The new Faculty of Pharmacy Foundation will focus its efforts on attracting philanthropic funds forall areas of research in the Faculty and from all areas of the pharmacy profession, including the pharmaceutical industry and community pharmacy. This will ensure a continuation of the previous pharmacy management and practice initiatives and funding for exciting new cross-disciplinary research initiatives."
Dr Michael Spence, Vice Chancellor and Principal, was among over two hundred colleagues from the University and the Pharmacy profession who attended the event and joined in the theme of 'Looking Back, Looking Forward'.
Highlights at the event included four guest speakers, all pharmacy graduates at different stages of their careers, who shared their perspective on how studying pharmacy at Sydney had helped shape their lives.
They were Dr Geoffrey Vaughan AO, former Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Monash University (and former Australian Wallaby), Sandra Bates, Creative Director of the Ensemble Theatre, Benison O'Reilly, medical writer and published author and Daniel Rifkin, a recent graduate of the Bachelor of Pharmacy at Sydney.
"It was a very enjoyable night of celebration of our Faculty's and our profession's achievements in the past ten years. With the help of the Foundation we can look forward with great optimism to the next ten" said Professor Ramzan.
