Hunstead gift brings distinguished researchers to SIfA

4 November 2015

Thanks to a generous gift from Professor Dick Hunstead, three distinguished researchers are visiting the Sydney Institute for Astronomy during November.

Professor Ortwin Gerhard from the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics is an expert on stellar dynamics and the structure of galaxies. He gave a seminar on Tuesday 3rd November on the shape and structure of the bar and bulge of the Milky Way.

Professor Rosemary Wyse will speak to SIfA on Thursday 5th November on the structure and substructure of the Milky Way. She is a professor at Johns Hopkins University and is renowned for her work on galaxy formation, composition and evolution.

Later this month, Dr. Sarah Kendrew will visit SIfA from the Optical/Infrared instrumentation group at Oxford. She is a Simulations Scientist for the HARMONI instrument for the European Extremely Large Telescope.

Past visitors funded by the Hunstead gift were:

  • Richard Bower (Durham)
  • Chiaki Kobayashi (ANU)
