Postcard from Xi'an

16 May 2013

Jill Trewhella reports from her recent visit to Xi'an Jiaotong University in China as part of the Go8-C9 Research Leadership Excellence Shadowing Program.

I have had the pleasure these past two weeks of being hosted by Vice-President for Research Professor Song Xiaoping at Xi’an Jiaotong University as part of the Go8-C9 Research Leadership Excellence Shadowing Program.  Some of you will have had the pleasure of meeting Professor Song during his two weeks with us at Sydney last October.

Xi’an Jiaotong University is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in China, having been founded in Shanghai in 1896 as Nanyang Public, renamed Jiaotong University in 1921, then moved to China’s ancient capital Xi’an in Shaanxi Province in 1956.

Today it is a modern comprehensive university with 30,000 students and a major focus on science and engineering. The University is host to many outstanding materials and engineering laboratories.

I toured a number of their State Key Laboratories (Multiphase Flow  in Power Engineering; Strength and Vibration; Manufacturing Systems Engineering), as well as their International Dielectric Research Centre and School of Materials Science.

The investment in research infrastructure is impressive and with their international engagement a strong focus, it seems that there are significant opportunities for collaboration.  Research translation as a priority was evident at the signing ceremony I attended along with the Vice Governor of Shaanxi Province Li Jincheng and University President Zheng for a cooperation agreement between the University and Shaanxi Yanchang Petroleum (Grop) Corp. Ltd.
