Professor Tony Weiss has been appointed Chair of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology for the Australian Research Council's College of Experts.

Professor Weiss' appointment, made at the end of January 2010, was made by Senator Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, after being recommended to the Minister by senior executives of the Australian Research Council.

The Australian Research Council's College of Experts is made up of experts from universities, research organisations and industry across Australia. The College of Experts provides strategic advice and plays a key role in the identification of research excellence.

Discipline groups within the College of Experts are responsible for assessing and ranking ARC grant applications submitted under the National Competitive Grants Program, making funding recommendations to the ARC. The discipline groups also provide strategic advice to the ARC on emerging disciplines and cross-disciplinary developments in their relevant areas.

As Chair of the Biological Sciences and Biotechnology group, Professor Weiss will oversee a group of 13 biology experts and will be responsible for handing out the largest fraction of ARC grant funds and fellowships.

"Becoming Chair means a lot to me. The Australian Research Council is a remarkable organisation - one of the two dominant granting bodies that are helping to drive forward my area of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology," said Professor Weiss.

Professor Weiss will serve as Chair for one year, having already served as a member of the Biological Sciences and Biotechnology discipline group of the College of Experts for the past two years.

"It's great to be leading a fine group of outstanding specialists, drawn from around the country to decide on and allocate funds," said Professor Weiss.

"It's exciting to support and nurture the progress of Australian science. And I'm particularly thrilled that the budget that my team commands dominates the Australian Research Council's funding budget."
